Signs of a shift in rhetoric and tone in Ayatollah Khamenei’s stance regarding Trump were evident in his recent speech during a meeting with Iranian champion athletes and winners of global scientific Olympiads. This shift is considerable and noteworthy.
Introducing more ambiguity about the success of the American attack on nuclear facilities and the limitation of Iran’s nuclear power, coupled with an emphasis that missile strikes on Israel will be repeated whenever necessary, gives meaning to part of this change in tone when announcing positions. It seems that Ayatollah Khamenei, observing signs in the calculations of the other side to lay the groundwork for increasing pressure on Iran, has adopted more explicit language, while also intending to correct the other side’s calculations regarding Iran’s internal environment.
The reflection and reaction of international media and the effects these statements have had so far also indicate the level of success of these positions. But beyond correcting calculations about Iran, Western experts believe the recent statements by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution of Iran will also have significant regional effects concerning Trump’s recent diplomatic actions for Israel and West Asia.
To understand the nature of this impact and how it will challenge Trump’s peace plan, one must understand several key calculations of the other side. What the think tank “Chatham House” recently reminded Trump—to guarantee the success of the Gaza peace plan and a new ordering of West Asia—helps in understanding this issue well. According to the report by this important Western think tank, Trump’s peace plan will effectively reach a dead end without Iran’s presence, and he must accept that limiting Iran’s nuclear power through the recent military attack alone will not be achieved. He must activate a diplomatic plan in exchange for economic incentives towards Iran, and more notably, Trump must prevent another Israel-Iran war; otherwise, he should expect the decline of his peace plan for the West Asian region.
If we review the recent positions of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution of Iran again with these key calculations in mind, we realize that these statements will effectively create a major challenge for Trump in the region as well. Iran’s Leader has not only moved his country’s diplomatic space several steps forward by changing his tone but has also made conditions more difficult for the plan to save and boost the morale of Israel.
The statement “Keep dreaming!” by Ayatollah Khamenei regarding the claims made about the dimensions of the success of the attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities, and the emphasis on repeating missile strikes on Israel if necessary, are seemingly limited and brief sentences, but in depth, they are very strategic, timely, and impactful.
Trump, who has not achieved any particular diplomatic success regarding China and Russia, hopes to at least get out of the impasse of achievements in foreign policy by creating a peace plan in Gaza and West Asia. Ayatollah Khamenei, with his new statements, has now dimmed the horizon for Trump’s peace success and, by changing his tone at an important juncture, has adopted positions whose effects challenge not only Iran’s internal environment but also the stages of the region’s surrender to America.
